look, if it was a tie game or one goal either way, then yeah what Benn did was stupid and he should be in the locker room getting Fistriced by all his teammates (to Fistric, verb, to strike an individual in the head with whatever is handy)
but, in the final minute of a blowout, when the other team runs your goalie, who is your best player and just came off IR, you F--- HIM UP....Big Rig goes over to him and says "hey that wasn't nice" and everyone else is too busy slinking off the ice with their tails between their legs....at least someone was willing to stand up for his buddy. Especially as they'd pretty much abandoned him for the whole game. Was it over the top, sure, did Benn deserve a 5 and 10, absolutely. Should Jamie Benn be the one to do it, probably not. In fact, I would've prefered Big O do his talking with his gloves off. But at least the message is sent for the rest of the season that taking runs at our guy won't be tolerated.
It's the reverse of what happened a few years back when Ott got jumped by all 5 Ducks as the final horn sounded and the rest of the team headed off to the room and left him to be pounded. It looked bad to the fans, it looked bad to the rest of the league, and it said a lot about the cohesion on that team.
BMo is on his way out. He knows it. He knows the only way he finishes the season on this team is if he pulls a Sundin and refuses to go. Frankly, a lot of the time he plays like it. This week, Jamie has made his case to be the next one with the Thornton fight and this thing tonight. I see them as points in his favor. And to be honest, '07-'08 BMo, back when he still played like he cared and we all still loved him, would have done the same thing Jamie did tonight....ok, he might not have hit him in the back, but he would have made sure the message was sent....effectively.

Hall's hit was a intentional knee-on-knee that resulted in an injury...Benn's hit was a crosscheck to the low back that was "embellished" and did not result in an injury (despite Jones lying there like he was dead for 5 minutes)......fine sure, not suspension unless Benn has a history which I don't recall him having one
I still disagree that Hall's thing was him intentionally going after the knee. The replays still show it being something that just didn't go according to plan.
Anyway...Benn stormed off the bench and laid a heavy crosscheck on Jones right at the name plate.
Given that Jones' thing with Lehtonen seemed to be accidental and resolved before Benn even came on the ice, Benn's retaliation was more frustration than "I need to stick up for my goalie". And even though the game was more or less resolved by then, Benn did take the Stars from a man advantage to having to pk to keep things where they were.
Furthermore, Benn's actions put the team at risk of possibly losing him for a game or few (however remote that chance), which isn't something that we can afford since GM Joe decided to give away one of our better snipers.
Way I see it, it's undisciplined play that serves no purpose except to reflect poorly on GG's ability to keep his players in check. Of course, that was already in evidence with the continuous parade of black to the penalty box, but...Benn's major reinforced the point.

Jones knew exactly what he was doing. He has had a pattern of doing this discreetly to opposing netminders. He deserved it. And btw he is one of the worst chirpers in the league. I think justice was served. The game was already in the books by the time this happened. Just Benn saying that you will not do this again.

Sitting thru that game was unbearable!!! Our offense was good, just Dubnyk was better. The problem is our forwards not back checking and helping out our crappy veteran d-men and our wet behind the ears d-men (neither of these are pointed at Dillon...He's a bad ass). If I am Gully, I break up the top line. Morrow and Jagr are not working with Benn and he is suffering. If they are scoring, then it could be overlooked, but they are in a funk and Benn's frustration showed at the 4:03 mark of the third. If he had come off the bench and challenged Jones face to face, then I would have gained a ton respect for him. Unfortunately, he decided to punk Jones from behind. Not smart!
My lines would focus on pairs +1
Loui-Benn+Cole
Roussel-Roy+Jagr
Morrow-Eakin+Smith
Nystrom-Fiddler+Garbutt
When Whitney gets back, he takes Roussel's spot and Morrow drops to the 4th line. Nystrom is the healthy scratch (or waived) with Vincour coming back up soon.

Daley called this game "laying an egg" on the post game show. The phrase "turd in the punchbowl" seemed more appropriate to me.
Or worse yet, "2000-2012 Dallas Cowboys". Some talent, but couldn't go three plays without shooting itself in the foot. Mediocre overall.

While it's nice that Benn stuck up for his goalie, it was more just him letting his frustration out. In the last three games he's got one assist, a -8, and now 17 PIM's. It was simply an undisciplined move, and he'll have it hanging over him on his record if something happens in the future. If this had been Morrow or Goligoski, you'd have to put them on police protection from some of the lollipops on this board.
